This article is available to download for free as a PDF for use as a personal learning tool or for use in the classroom as a teaching resource. Why reading is important for babies and young children Since plays tend to be shorter than novels, it is a good idea to read a play twice in preparation for a seminar or a workshop, rather than once: you will have a better understanding of it. How is the passing of time represented? Does the play abide by linear time, as measured by the clock, or does it represent another kind of time, jagged, discontinuous – time as experienced by the subject?.How are emotional states and power relations represented within space, and in speech and gesture? Think, also, about how the space of the stage is used, structured and partitioned.Think about the stage set, and look at any information given about space: what is stated? What remains unstated? How much is left to the imagination?.They can indicate where the characters are positioned, their emotional states, how their words should be uttered and how they should move, and give many other valuable insights. The stage directions are part of the text to be read and interpreted: very often, particularly in modern and contemporary plays, the stage directions hold all the keys to the action. If the edition you have gives you information about the play’s performance history, read that too. You should look at all the indications given in the text with equal care, including the indications given in the margins about the play’s structure, in the list of characters and in any foreword or preface that might be included. Take time to linger on what you are reading: the details matter. When you read a play, try to really read it: read it aloud, at least in parts, adding intonation and gesture – no matter how tentatively – and think about the space or spaces that the text delineates and creates. There are different layers of meaning at work at any given time and on any given page: indeed, the forms of action depicted in a play are both literal (they call for actual utterances and movements) and symbolic (speech and gesture always mean more than what they simply are).Įven plays that are realistic and seem ‘real’ are very carefully constructed, and rely on visual images, movements and utterances that have a symbolic dimension. You should think about what the words imply, and you should go further: you should look deep within the space crafted by the text, and consider how forms of presence and absence are made to interact, how bodies and voices are made to interact, and how different tones and registers of being are made to interact.Ī play is as delicate a construction as a carefully-crafted poem or an evocative piece of prose, and the same line can be open to many interpretations. Reading a play is never a passive endeavour. Plays aren’t necessarily about a recognisable reality either.Īny given play creates its own world be it little or big, that world is always specific to itself. Some plays have no defined characters and many have no plot many plays, also, feature characters that don’t have a fully-fledged psychology and don’t purport to seem real at all. The text consists not simply of lines in verse or prose, but of visual images and poetic combinations of words and movements that engage the imagination and the emotions.Ĭharacter and plot are important – you must ensure that you have a strong grasp of the plot – but plays aren’t simply about character or about plot. Reading a play requires, first and foremost, having faith in the powers of your own imagination: a play is an invitation to imagine bodies and voices in a space. A play has many lives beyond the page – not simply on stage, but in the minds of its readers. Any given performance will add some elements to a playtext and take other elements out of it, and as such a performance is also a text in its own right, open to interpretation, which complements the playtext but is not the playtext itself.Ī play asks to be imagined and gives this right to everyone. It is not necessary to know a lot about performance or about acting to read a play, discuss it in a seminar, or write about it well.Īnd it is not necessary to have seen a performance of a play to understand its nuances and details: that’s because a playtext always has a tense and tentative relation to the idea of its realisation as a performance. Among the three great textual genres (the novel, the poem, the play), the play tends to suffer the most from unhelpful clichés and unhelpful assumptions about reading.

Non-fiction also contains arcs, if they’re any good. Their world changes in some way from the beginning to the end of the story. Good novels typically have story arcs for each key character. Alternatively, read a biography about the author. If you’re evaluating an older book, check the references and read one or two other books that informed this one. You could even read or listen to interviews with them. If you’re evaluating a contemporary author, these factors are easy to identify. They have a specific viewpoint, biases and write from the viewpoint of their education, geography and history. Review the Context Behind the BookĪuthors don’t write books in a vacuum. If it’s a classic novel, chances are someone already did the hard work for you. However, book reviews and book descriptions are a useful jumping-off point. It will also help you contrast different controlling ideas and even writer your own.Ī topic statement is harder to identify for fiction. If you’re struggling to identify the thesis statement, Google for a book review. It’s usually a one or two sentences summary of the key themes or arguments in the book. Typically, the writer explains their idea or argument in the introduction and conclusion. Establish the Book’s Key IdeaĮvery good non-fiction book contains a single controlling idea, topic statement or thesis statement that sums up what it’s about. Spacious margins and line heights are of real benefit here. Tip: When annotating a book with multiple prints, try to get the one with the most spacious typesetting. When complete, you can export these notes to your email and review. If you’re reviewing a book on Kindle, use the annotation feature. Obviously, if it’s your favourite book, you’ll probably need to buy a second copy just for the purposes of annotation. On the second (and third and fourth) read-throughs, you need to write ALL OVER that book. Get a set of coloured markers, pencils, pens and mini sticky notes and put aside what you learned at school about never writing on books. If you are analyzing non-fiction, consider how accurately the introduction and conclusion sum up the book. Use the table of contents to jump around to key sections and chapters. Pay close attention to the author’s writing style. The second time around, approach the book more critically. If it’s a classic novel, enjoy it! In some cases, non-fiction book repeat themes and ideas, so it’s fine to skip around. The first time around, you don’t need to think about analysis. Read the Book Twice Use the table of contents to jump around to key sections and chapters Then try reading from different genres for variety and to learn what sort of techniques are universal.
